Temporal Anomalies in Time Travel Movies
unravels
Old Guestbook Postings

Although it is more convenient for me to receive and reply to your e-mail (at MJYoung@mjyoung.net), some people prefer guestbooks.
I encouraged posting of thoughts on the temporal anomalies discussed in these pages--
and on any of the other pages linked to this one.
I said to write whatever the poster liked--the fields were mostly suggestions.
When Yahoo! purchased GeoCities, they ended most of the good things available on that site, including guestbook posting; this page has since been moved here, but it is not possible to post to it.
It's also been redesigned in accord with the rest of the Temporal Anomalies site.

The Quick Jumps are in the opposite order from the posts on the page; this is because the posts are listed in reverse chronological order (newest on top) and are not always easy to follow in that order.  I've made some comments in connection with some posts.  My comments are always in italics, and no posts are.

Does any of this page make sense?: Quite a bit
What other time problem would you like solved?: same matter from different time
Do you play Role Playing Games?: They get redundant
Have you looked at the Multiverser game?: ...the what?
What was your reaction, in a word?: transcendental
Is there another web page I should see?: "Cartoon Over-Analyzations"

Comments:
Very fascinating science and philosophy... and derived from sci-fi! Time travel is virtually deemed impossible simply because matter cannot be removed and placed in a new time (you don't have to kill anyone in another time to create a paradox- just perform cellular respiration for a few seconds!) A BIG maybe.

Of course, a lot of that is discussed in the pages of this site.  I'm not arguing that time travel is possible; I'm just trying to work out what happens if it is.

What was your reaction, in a word?: Fun page

Comments:
I'm enjoying your page and have linked it to my sight where I have included a discussion on time travel in Babylon 5. I am not aware if you are a fan of the show or not, but I would appriciate any comments. H.C.

Regretably, the site is no longer posted at that location.  If it turns up somewhere else, someone should let me know.

Hi. I'm studying terminator for my a-levels in media studies and this site is amazing. Thanks.

This is not the only case of the Temporal Anomalies materials being used by students.  It's on the reading list for a course in metaphysics in science fiction at York College in Pennsylvania.

What other time problem would you like solved?: All of them.
Do you play Role Playing Games?: Not for years
Have you looked at the Multiverser game?: No.
What was your reaction, in a word?: To the time travel discussions, wow. Tell me more...
Is there another web page I should see?: Signposts Timeline. Not time travel, but a potential future history.

Comments:
Stumbled across yours and Chuck Buckley's discussion over aspects of time travel while looking for the aforementioned 'Signposts Timelime' (http://hometown.aol.com/kurellian/spint.html). I've hardcopied your comments for reading - are Chuck's available on the Net ? (I'm not always sure what you're replying to, but I can guess... ).

Your discussion of parallel/divergent timelines is fascinating. I'm attempting to do an SF 'series' myself (possibly for TV but more likely books) and have said 'no time travel/parallel universe stories' as they seem to be overdone. Everyone is doing them Stargate, Earth:Final Conflict, Voyager/DS9... you name it. But your page has made me think it might be worth doing just one (Sorry, Hugh! My co-writer incidentally... ) as I wanted to explore the characters past without doing time travel or flashback.

As I said, your 'divergent timeline' discussion caught my eye. Could timelines converge and become one again if events matched exactly after a period? I realise on an atomic level (as stated) particles are going to bounce apart and in all probability never come into contact again by following random or quantum paths, but could it (theoretically) happen? Could the symmetry of the arrow of time (as theorised by Stephen Hawking) happen without actually reversing the arrow?

The answer is probably 'no', but I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Chuck's comments are linked from his post below.

I've been asked whether timelines can converge, and my feeling is that there can only be one history of the universe, so they can't.

Is there another web page I should see?: my timetravel pages

Comments:
Impressive! I believe advances will only be made in the TRUE beginings of comprehension of the subject of timetravel if we take a NON-LINEAR approach. We're just too "programmed" in linear thinking on this subject. I have enjoyed what I have read so far.

Chuck and I discussed several time travel problems hosted on his site, beginning here, and continuing here, then here, and finally here.  My answers, without his questions, are reproduced here, here, here, and here, on pages that load a bit faster than his heavy-graphics site, but you might need his side of the discussion to get the sense of it.

Followed the explanation of Back to the Future parts one and three pretty well but I'm going to have to think about part 2 for a little while. Enjoyed reading about it.

Parts one, two, and three are among the earliest pages on this site, and still popular.

Have you looked at the Multiverser game?: not yet

Comments:
Why was Peggy Sue Got Married never added to the list?

Rhonda's question was the stimulus for getting Peggy Sue posted; I hope she's seen it since then.  Meanwhile, it appears her web site no longer exists.

Your web-page is interesting, and it's nice to see someone else besides myself into time-travel as much as I am.

Ryan sent several letters found in the correspondence section of the site, under the name Sauce96, including a very interesting time travel story of his own which we discussed.

I only just viewed the movie (Twelve Monkeys) on video for the first time. I couldn't understand two things and you helped me with each. I couldn't understand where she remembered him from or how Bob fit into things. I read several other web reviews an only yours adressed my two questions. Thanks

I frequently forget that the 12 Monkeys materials were up as long ago as this.

Fascinating page, well thought out and expressed. While I disagree with some of your conclusions, the logic here is flawless. To aid the casual reader in the understanding of your pages, perhaps a basic primer on the "Rules of Time" and the terms you are using might prove useful.

Chris wrote a couple of letters to me which were included and answered in the correspondence section of the site, under the name Doctor TOC.

I kept this post, although I deleted some other "empty" posts (and a few spammers), because it preserved the date, reminding me, at least, how long this has been running now.
