It probably took about an hour for them to wend their way back to D-41. The doors and the adjacent rooms had been repaired, and although some of the people here had changed, Old Ricky was still here. Beam took control of the situation.
"Your attention please, everyone! I have an announcement. I am Emperor James Donald Beam, and with the very recent retirement of your Vibgyor I am now ruler of this city. There will be some changes. The first of these has by now started: construction in room D-2 will make it possible for all citizens to be outside, as we are creating an open porch to get fresh air and sunshine. Please spread the word throughout the city."
They stared at him, as if they were completely confused. Wondering for a moment whether to say anything else, he thought of something.
"Oh, and Old Ricky: a collection of galaxies is called a cluster. The Milky Way Galaxy is part of the Local Area Cluster. Clusters in turn are part of superclusters, I think ours is the Virgo Supercluster, and superclusters are parts of larger superclusters, but that s all I remember."
He then headed to the far door. He passed through the black bar and again found a small gathering of people. He gave them the same speech he had given to the others, then backtracked through D-41 and into the food production room, F-41. He repeated his message.
As they headed to maintenance to repeat the message there, Beam said, "There's got to be a better way to do this." No one suggested anything. He delivered his message to maintenance and returned to the office of the former Vibgyor.
"I suppose," he said, "this is where we're going to live for a while. Everyone search the room, see what we've got." He, meanwhile, sat behind the desk and casually rummaged through the drawers.
