Previous chapter: Cooper 66
Derek was a bit tired. After dinner, the group had gotten a cab to Granville’s place, and Tommy had taken the first watch. Derek had returned home for a nap, and taken over in the middle of the night, being relieved by Vashti in the morning. Derek lent his bicycle to Tommy to get home, and Vashti had the robot carry her there for her shift. Other than two roaming collared dogs getting into a fight for about five minutes of growling and thirty seconds of snapping and darting at each other, nothing had happened in his shift, and he had enjoyed the peaceful night under the twinkling stars and half moon.
He went to bed when he got home, and when he awoke Vashti had already returned from her shift and was cleaning up in the kitchen. He joined her, but said, “I need to get a bit more sleep if I’m going to relieve Tommy at midnight, so we’d better get started on supper.”
“You get a nap,” she answered. “The robot and I will make supper. I can feed Tommy before she leaves for her shift, and have food waiting for Brian, and for you whenever you get up.”
“It’s too bad they don’t have microwaves,” Derek said. “You could put my dinner in the refrigerator and I could reheat it when I got up. But then, I’m awake now. You can help me with dinner, and then I’ll get a short nap after I’ve eaten and maybe take a sandwich or something with me to Granville’s.”
