Previous chapter:  Cooper 114

As he had hoped, the enemy quailed before the fury of a screaming charging knife-wielding black man.  Their guns had failed them, and it did not occur to them to try again.  They turned to flee--all but one which caught the tip of Bradley’s spear and collapsed.

Kondor and Zeke ran on, the girls trailing behind them.  Bradley would undoubtedly catch up.  Catching up with the slowest of the enemy, Kondor pulled him backward onto the ground, then landed a foot on his chest to knock the wind out of him.  “Stay there,” he said unnecessarily, as he snatched the gun from his hands.

He would like to put bullets in the legs of each of the others, but he had two problems.  One was the gun--a type with which he was not familiar and so could not promise accuracy, and which from all reports was not terribly accurate itself.  The other was that Zeke, Deirdre, and Amanda had all passed him (Svaya was holding back), creating a wall of friendlies between him and the enemy.

Of course, that was a good thing, he thought as Bradley passed him.  He rejoined the pursuit of their attackers in time to see Amanda deliver a solid hit to one and Zeke put a crippling gash in the leg of another and run on.

The remaining two attackers burst out the front doors, but apparently they stopped there.  He heard the sound of a bullhorn--apparently the officer who fled hadn’t been worthless, but had managed somehow to call for backup.  Kondor stopped still in the hall and used the cellular phone Gear had issued him to call and explain their situation.  The voice at the other end said, “We’ll handle it.”

He stepped outside and saw that the police had rounded up everyone coming out of the building, and one of them began to approach him and Zeke as they emerged with their respective weapons.  Then an officer wearing a suit and tie called out, “Kondor?  Smith?”

“That’s us,” he said, and the officer came over.  “I’m instructed that I’m to release you, and expect a report from your office concerning these events.  You’re free to go.”

“The black woman,” he said, “is with us; she’s part of an ongoing investigation.”

The inspector nodded, and returned to the group.  Amanda came over to them.

“I guess you have some clout,” she said.  “Thanks.”

“Don’t thank me yet.  Zeke is going to take you to get that video, and you’re coming with us to show it to our boss.”

She nodded in acquiescence.

They retrieved their motorcycles and split up, Amanda riding with Zeke.
