“Friends of yours?” Kondor said to Amanda.  She shook her head.

“Sometimes,” she said, “I handle blackmailing payoffs or retrievals, but I make it known clearly upfront, nothing nasty.  I’ve helped a number of people save their marriages, a few clerks who got trapped by foreign intelligence get untrapped, and the like.  Well, I got a job to steal a video, and as I do I checked the video, and–war crimes.  I saw two men, one I recognized, execute about a couple dozen families in Africa.  The man I recognized is the up and coming likely next UN Secretary General.  When I tried to turn it over to the Metro police, they tried to capture me.  So I thought of you.  That was two days ago,  which means, no surprise, someone in Metro called the Saudi Arabian embassy.”

“Well, assuming we survive this,” he replied, “I’m going to need that video.  I’m pretty sure that my boss will authorize doing something, although the way the department works he’ll probably tell me to do something.”

Their conversation was interrupted by the arrival of six men armed with AK-47s.  I’ll have to get one of those, he said; he was probably better with the knife than he would be with the unfamiliar gun, but it would be like enough to rifles he had used, and his own M-16, that he could do more damage faster with it than he could with the knife.  However, for the moment he was going to have to use the knife.

That meant he was going to have to reach the enemy without being shot.

He had never used it in the field before, but he had seen Lauren use it, and she had taught it to him.  Raising his left hand to help him focus he threw a psionic force wall in front of them.  A hail of bullets hit it and deflected, pinging around the space in front of them.  Obviously confused by the inefficacy of their weapons, the attackers stopped attacking.  Try something else new, he thought, and with an intimidating scream he dropped the shield and charged at the enemy.
