Previous chapter:  Slade 283

“Captain Kondor, we sent agents to confront Doctor Phillip Albert at the Brackett Laboratory.  We were late.  A group of three individuals came in, with guns, and cleaned out the place.  Dr. Albert confessed he had a functional cold fusion device hidden in a cabinet.  It was, however, not very effective, and he was trying to refine the process.  He was worried that the government would take the project away from him.  As he said ‘we stole it from someone else, why wouldn’t we steal it from him?’”  C sighed behind his desk.

Kondor and Zeke took their chairs, and waited.

“It was a logical point,” C admitted.  “Despite my best efforts at being as honest as I can, trust in Her Majesty's government continues to decline.  Not your problem, gentlemen.  Despite his lack of complete faith in us, he did manage to secrete the ‘biotracker’ you gave him in the cold fusion devices.  I assume that was a material object from another universe that you can track with scriff, Captain Kondor?”

Kondor nodded.

“Are you all right, sir?”

C forced a smile.

“More disasters than means of solving them.  I wonder if I might detach Lieutenant Zeke for a local mission while you go and retrieve the science experiment, or blow it up, Captain Kondor.”  The two men who were becoming closer like brothers shared a quick look, but the decision was already made.

“Of course, C, I can help,” Zeke said.

“Now if only I had about four more versers, I’d feel like I could take a day off to sleep,” C said.  “Captain Kondor, Theodore will take you to a secret airbase, and Cameron will take the good lieutenant down to the Disguise Section.  Questions?”  There were none, and all of them abstained from wishing each other luck as Kondor did not like that.  But smiles were exchanged, and the men left for their separate missions.
