Previous chapter: Chapter 20: Hastings 142
Abruptly the palace was in an uproar. Orders were echoing in the hallways; somewhere a gong was sounding, and groups of guards were seen racing in all directions. Several came running toward Kondor and Zeke.
“This can’t be good,” Zeke said.
“No,” Kondor replied. “We should retire to our rooms--but first,” he called louder, “Could one of you gentlemen tell me what is happening?”
The lead guard stopped, and waved the others to continue. “A strange creature was seen entering the palace through an upper window.”
“Ah, and the plan is to locate, detain, confine, and identify?”
The guard nodded, and Kondor waved him on with a quick “Thank you.”
“A strange creature?” Zeke asked. “Do you think it’s safe?”
“I suspect that you and I know exactly what the strange creature is. Come on, let’s hurry back to the rooms. I’m sure Slade is already trying to decide how to respond to this crisis, and we might want to be part of that.”
“Ah, right. Never a dull moment, is there?”
“Well, we’ve had a few quiet days here and there.”
“Right.” They started jogging back toward their quarters.
