These Three Things
Mark J. Young

There was a time when Peter could be truly called a stone,
A positive foundation, a man who stood alone.
But now that I've denied him, and I think of things I've said,
I guess I must be Simon; I suppose that Peter's dead.

Don't worry dear, it's not that bad.
I hate to see you look so sad.
Your life was spared; you should be glad--
Don't think of what you could have had.

When Jesus called me Peter, 'though it seems a little odd,
I'd just completed saying, "You're the Christ, the Son of God."
A maid beside a fire--no, I wasn't sorely tried,
But when she had me frightened, that's the first thing I denied.

Don't worry dear, it's not the end.
At least we can go home again.
Don't think of how it might have been.
Our Lord will soon be dead.

Remember when you said to Him that we left everything we own?
We gave it all to follow Him--our fishing, family, friends and home.
Perhaps this can be called, somehow, the second thing that you denied.
But don't you know it's over now, and Jesus soon will be crucified.

And then when Jesus told us that we all would run away
Each one of us insisted that He knew that we would stay.
It's then I said that surely I would die beside His side;
But sitting by the fire, that's the third thing I denied.

There was a time when Peter could be truly called a stone,
A positive foundation, a man who stood alone.
But now that I've denied Him, and I think of things I've said,
I guess I must be Simon; I suppose that Peter's dead.
