Previous chapter: Chapter 55: Slade 108
Since the stairwell door had conveniently been blown off its hinges, Derek decided to use that stairway. There was a chance that the terrorists would send reinforcements that direction, but in all likelihood if they heard the blast they were assuming that his team was finished. It would take at least a few minutes for anyone to figure out what had really happened, and by then they would have achieved the thirtieth floor and moved away from the stairs.
Moved where, though? Derek was not at all certain how to find this bomb, as he scanned the thirtieth floor directory telling him what was where. Inside he smiled, that “bomb” was not on the list.
Then he stopped. “Pete?”
“If you were trying to hide a nuclear bomb,” he paused, thinking through what he wanted to ask, “one thing you would want to do is shield the radiation, so that it couldn’t be tracked with a Geiger counter, right?”
“I would think so. The bomb itself would be shielded, of course, but they are usually detectable to some degree.”
“And would they have that kind of shielding in some of the rooms of the office of doctors who practiced nuclear medicine and radiology?”
“They would almost have to,” Pete said.
“Then I think we may have found our bomb. This way, gentlemen,” and he headed in the direction of the offices of Doctors Mitchell and Roberts, on the north side of the building next to Clearshot Photography.
