{"id":5392,"date":"2021-10-11T22:27:09","date_gmt":"2021-10-11T22:27:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/?p=5392"},"modified":"2021-10-11T22:27:09","modified_gmt":"2021-10-11T22:27:09","slug":"418-are-there-too-many-people-escaping-in-exodus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/418-are-there-too-many-people-escaping-in-exodus\/","title":{"rendered":"#418: Are There Too Many People Escaping in Exodus?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is <i>mark Joseph &#8220;young&#8221;<\/i> blog entry #418, on the subject of <i>Are There Too Many People Escaping in Exodus?<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>This is a continuation of a response to the article <i><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/excommunications\/ten-reasons-why-the-bibles-story-of-the-exodus-is-not-true-4144bc305665\">Ten Reasons Why the Bible&#8217;s Story of the Exodus Is Not True<\/a><\/i>, requested by a Facebook contact.<\/p>\n<ol start=0>\n<li>The introductory article was <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/index.php\/415-can-the-exodus-story-be-true\/\">#415:&nbsp; Can the Exodus Story Be True?<\/a><\/i>\n<\/li>\n<li>It was followed by an answer to the first objection, <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/index.php\/416-does-archaeological-silence-disprove-the-exodus\/\">#416:&nbsp; Does Archaeological Silence Disprove the Exodus?<\/a><\/i>\n<\/li>\n<li>Turning to the second objection about whether such a departure could be organized, we offered <i><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/index.php\/417-is-the-beginning-of-the-exodus-account-implausible\/\">#417:&nbsp; Is the Beginning of the Exodus Account Implausible?<\/a><\/i>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The third objection in simple form reads &#8220;A really long line,&#8221; which is expanded, &#8220;Two and a half million people would have created a line well over 200 miles long (at eight abreast with only three feet between each row) along with their animals, of which the Bible says they had many.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img0418Parade.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img0418Parade-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5393\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img0418Parade-300x169.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.mjyoung.net\/weblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/img0418Parade.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I notice that the number of people just increased by twenty-five percent, from an estimated two million to two and a half million; but it&#8217;s an estimate, so we&#8217;ll let it slide.&nbsp; The issue seems to be that a column that long could not outrun Pharaoh&#8217;s charioteers.<\/p>\n<p>However, we have a couple of assumptions here.<\/p>\n<p>First, there&#8217;s no reason to assume that these people are walking in parade formation.&nbsp; The author gets this outrageous length of the line by making it very narrow.&nbsp; I think eight abreast would be roughly twenty feet wide, but we&#8217;ll call it twenty-five.&nbsp; Twenty-five feet by two hundred miles creates a total area of less than one square mile&#8211;and there&#8217;s no reason to think these people were trying to follow a road or stay between the lines.&nbsp; We have a mob.&nbsp; If it formed a circle, it would have a diameter of about two thirds of a mile.<\/p>\n<p>Obviously it&#8217;s going to cover a lot of area, and obviously it&#8217;s not going to do so efficiently, but the two hundred mile line is an artificial construct that is extremely implausible, created to make it seem absurd.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, we are talking about hikers outrunning charioteers, but whether that can happen really depends on their head start.&nbsp; We are not given that information.&nbsp; We are told that when the Israelites departed Pharaoh was glad to see the back of them, but before they reached the water he changed his mind and pursued them.&nbsp; We don&#8217;t know how long it took for them to reach the crossing; we are told that they camped along the way, but also that they traveled by day and night, so they were apparently eager to keep moving.&nbsp; So given the lack of information on those details, it is not at all implausible that Israel could reach the crossing before Pharaoh caught them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is mark Joseph &#8220;young&#8221; blog entry #418, on the subject of Are There Too Many People Escaping in Exodus?.
